Adding the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to your Effective Teaching Repertoire
Teachers will learn about the structure of the NGSS including the newly released assessable components. These performance expectations are linked to the disciplinary core ideas(DCIs) and connecting concepts found in the Framework for K-12 Science Education. The links between science and engineering are also identified as well as connections to other DCIs. Depending on the length and desired scope for the workshop, participants will use the NGSS to address common misconceptions that students bring to the classroom by use of effective strategies for achieving conceptual change. These will be illustrated by participation in hands-on, brain-active lessons that use critical thinking and inquiry. Teachers will also utilize other resources such as the Atlas for Science Literacy and the AAAS Project 2061 Assessment Database in outlining lesson strategies for identifying and challenging student misconceptions of key science ideas.
