Movement, Control, and Coordination
Muscle and Nerve Basics

Grades 4-6

Students explore the basics of muscle and nerve action through a variety
of model building, role play, and dissection activities. Students examine
the basic structure of muscle action on bones through the dissection of
a Cornish hen. Through role play and models, they develop an
understanding of how the microscopic sliding filaments can result in
muscle contraction. The basic organization of the nervous system is
also explored. Students also have the opportunity to test the behavior
of their own nervous systems.
