Circulation
Getting Oxygen and Nutrients to your Body

Grades 6-9

By measuring their own heart rates and examining actual heart specimens,
students explore the components of the cardiovascular system (heart,
lungs, veins, arteries, capillaries, and blood) and learn to see them
as interconnected elements of a single dynamic system. Students apply
the scientific method by analyzing the effect of a factor (height,
gender, physical activity, or emotions) on the resting heart rates of
the class members. Students also determine the hematocrit of blood
samples reinforcing the role of the red blood cell in supplying oxygen
to cells.
