The Microbial World
Microbes In, On, and Around You
Grades 6-9

Students will discover the fascinating microbial world present around them every day. Students start
by sampling a variety of places in their school as well as locations on themselves. After describing
their results in terms of numbers and variety of microorganisms found, students will become familiar
with the major groups of microorganisms-fungi, protozoa, bacteria, and viruses. Discussion emphasizes
both the similarities and differences between the groups. Students will discuss how they can limit
negative interactions with microorganisms as well as gain an appreciation for many of the important
things that microorganisms can do for us.

Water
Unique Molecule-Vital Resource
Grades 6-9

Student start by appreciating the varied and ubiquitous roles that water plays on earth. Water has many
unique properties and behaviors which are a result of water-s molecular structure. Students explore
the four states of matter as exemplified by water. The water cycle on the earth is experienced as
students become a water droplet and take a unique water cycle journey as they precipitate, evaporate,
and condense. Students try various tests to detect contaminants in water and techniques used to
clean up water. A distillation set up is used to turn salt water into fresh water.
