Circulation
Getting Oxygen and Nutrients to your Body
Grades 4-6

By measuring their own heart rates and examining actual heart specimens, students explore
the components of the cardiovascular system (heart, lungs, veins, arteries, capillaries,
and blood) and learn to see them as interconnected elements of a single dynamic system.
Students apply the scientific method by analyzing the effect of a factor (height, gender,
physical activity, or emotions) on the resting heart rates of the class members.

Respiration
Providing Oxygen for your Body
Grades 4-6

By constructing a functioning model lung, determining their own lung volume, and examining
actual lung specimens, students will become familiar with the basic structure and function
of the respiratory system. Students apply the scientific method by analyzing the effect of a
factor (height, gender, or, physical activity on the lung volume of the class members.

Circulation, Respiration, and Smoking
The Story of Four Chemicals in Smoke
Grades 4-6

The basics of circulation and respiration are reviewed with emphasis on their important
roles in the process of cellular respiration, the essential process by which cells obtain
energy. Four chemicals found in smoke are introduced and the effects of carbon monoxide
and cyanide on cellular respiration are emphasized. Students take on the role of red
cells in blood and compare their trips around the body in a healthy versus
smoker's body.
